Even small amounts of ambient light can cause problems. When scanning outdoors working at night is often the best option. When scanning during the day a blackout tent is needed.

[wptabtitle] Scan overlap [/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]In order to collect data all the way around an object or across a flat object’s surface you will likely have to take multiple scans. Ensuring that there is enough overlap between scans to find good match points is important. Here you can see more than 60% overlap between adjacent scans.

[wptabtitle] Data Voids [/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]As you add and align scans, check for voids or gaps in the dataset. You can easily fill these in with additional scans while everything is set up.

[wptabtitle] Unaligned Scans[/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]Aligning scans in OptoCAT is done during the data collection process. Once you have collected two scans they will appear un-aligned in the data volume. You will automatically be re-directed to the ‘Align data’ module. OptoCAT will not allow you to proceed until you have aligned the datasets.

[wptabtitle] Point Picking[/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]To align the scans pick matching points on each dataset. The point matching algorithm is fairly robust so you don’t have to be too careful.

[wptabtitle] Re-alignment[/wptabtitle] [wptabcontent]If you are unhappy with the alignment at any point you can revise the alignment of individual datasets by going to the ‘pre-align’ module and picking points as you would during the scan process.

BEGINNING YOUR OPTOCAT PROJECT:

Initialize a Project by clicking in the main left-hand menu on Scan>Contour Matching> Initialization (assuming you are not using the turntable in your project). A pop-up menu will appear where you can create a new project and select the directory where it will be stored, or you can initialize an existing project.

[wptabcontent]2. Once you have created or initialized a project a second pop-up menu will appear providing options for using a template for the project settings. Select the Full template, or a custom template you have created.

3. In the third pop-up menu, select the lens size you are using from the scanner serial number dialogue box. The lens size is appended to the end of the scanner serial number.
